Dr. Gianluca Polifrone is the Director General of the Fondazione Biotecnopolo di Siena, a national strategic initiative established by the Italian Government to advance health security, translational research, and biological preparedness. Appointed in June 2024, he brings extensive executive experience in public administration, health policy, and pharmaceutical regulation, having served for many years in senior management positions at AIFA (Italian Medicines Agency).
His professional career has focused on the governance of biotechnology innovation, regulatory strategy, and the transformation of healthcare systems, with particular attention to digital health and the relationship between scientific innovation and public health. He is the author of several books on healthcare transformation and digital health policy, most recently Rethinking Research (2026).
