Personal Information

After internship at the Pennsylvania Hospital, he began his scientific career at NIH. He published that IgG had two heavy chains of 50,000, and two light chains of 25,000. This data was a key component of his mentor, Rod Porter’s, Nobel Prize. He also published the polypeptide chain structure of IgM and IgA. In 1966, he became Professor and Chairman of Immunology at the University of Florida College of Medicine, where his goal was to continue research and improve medical education.

Rather than continuing studies on the structure of immunoglobulins, he focused on the function of IgA. As will be discussed in his presentation, this research utilized sprayed whole inactivated flu vaccine. These studies showed that the vaccine was 79% protective against drifted flu virus. This resulted from the fact that IgA was cross-reactive. As part of his emphasis on changing medical education at the University of Florida, he developed the Patient-Oriented Problem-Solving (POPS) system used by about half of US medical schools, and Peer Evaluation system, currently in use at more than 90% of them. These achievements led to his being chosen AOA National Basic Science Teacher of the Year in 1993. While caring for children in the Pediatric Clinic in the early 1980s, he began diagnosing HIV in babies. This led him and his wife to develop a high-school sex/AIDS education program, which was chosen by the CDC and National PTA as the best AIDS education program in the nation in 1988. He continues to have several projects.
